It's frustrating hearing about people I know through other people I know. The people I'm friends with tend to have such highly developed and nuanced perspectives on people that it's impossible to get any actual bearing on reality through what they report. It's like polarized lenses. When you look through one, you can see through it (accounting somewhat for the shade), but then you add another lens on top, twist it to an incompatible angle... and you can't see anything. If I made my judgments on the people around me based on what the other people around me were saying about them, I think I would hate everybody.

I have a friend that I haven't seen for a couple of years. It turns out that he views the period of time when I knew him as an obstacle that he's moved past. I've heard from people where he lives now that he jokes ruefully about hating everything from back then. Like he's a different person, and he's found a new world. That's stupid. Grow the fuck up.
